Journey Summary

This teacher course combines technology and content to teach computational and critical thinking and problem-solving literacy, which are tied to content and reasoning standards for mathematics.

Participants will master basic 3D game design with drag-and-drop coding and how to teach it through guided discovery using AgentCubes Online software provided by AgentSheets, Inc. Teachers will develop experience, gain confidence, and build resources for teaching students game design and simulation creation in a 3D environment and learn skills for interactive learning and community building along with the problem-solving and math-related skills for game design.

Upon successful completion of this course, teachers will learn how game design can help in differentiating and expanding learning for students, as well as have lessons and game examples for classroom implementation.

Introduction

Project eMINTS Designing Games for Education (eDGE) uses guided inquiry and project-first learning to innovatively combine computational thinking with math and science learning, exemplifying new possibilities for relevant and engaging mathematics education. The eDGE program is designed to infuse computer science and mathematics education with computational thinking so that computer science and mathematics are more integrated, relevant, and interesting for all students.

eDGE participants complete asynchronous professional development that includes two facilitated, self-paced courses to learn programming and mathematical connections for interactive and engaging student learning.

In the classroom, students will program games and simulations that model mathematical concepts including probability, proportional reasoning, statistical reasoning, the use of local and global variables, and functions in the context of computational thinking activities.

Theory Behind Practice

All eMINTS materials are grounded in research-based best practices in K-12 education.
